Schools out down Newland Ave

Took a stroll down Newland Ave later this afternoon, not long after the end of the school day. Navigating  the flurries of kids and parents and enjoying their excited/relieved/let's-get-home energy. Later, walking behind groups of teenagers with their mix of loud, funny, awkward, wahooooooo-ness. And a girl, with a serious, thoughtful poise about her.

Feeling inadequate in my hopes for them. Wondering how they're navigating all that's coming at them these days. In awe of them in so many ways.

Later, back at home, reminded of a poem written after watching Lewis Capaldi at Glastonbury (on the TV). In 2023. When he couldn't finish his set. Overwhelmed by anxiety and Tourrettes. The moving sight and sound of the crowd singing for him. Carrying him with their words and voices. The energy of the young fully present. And relishing the opportunity.

Let Them Sing
24th June 2023

When you’re singing your song
And your voice breaks
And everything inside
Is tired and aches
Let them sing.

Don’t make yourself struggle
Just to save face
It’s time to step back
Slow down the pace
And let them sing.

They know the words
They can carry the tune
They can hold their own
And they can hold you too
So let them sing.

Let them sing and soar
Rise up and roar
Revel in the new sound
That can only be found
When you let them sing.

So just stand and listen
Feel the ebb and the flow
Lean into the crowd
Hear the quiet and the loud
And let them sing.

Let them cheer you on
As you’ve cheered them on
Let them love you
As you’ve loved them
Let them use their voices
As you’ve used yours
And let them sing.
