Glory in the Minster

So we gathered. Yesterday. At the Minster. In the afternoon. After some of us walking there from North Bransholme and some from Hessle and Hessle Road.

Bishop Eleanor and I in an excited mild panic just before the Off. Suddenly realising that maybe we should have had a conversation at some point beforehand. But never mind, it seemed to suit the occasion. The feeling our way into it, the spontaniety, the frizzle of risk.

Thankfully Liz D was on hand to help out with the singing. And lead the way with an easy to learn chant: "Glory to God in the Highest! And Peace to the people in whom He is well pleased..." The banners from Walking with Angels cheering us on.

And then there was talk of the journey to where we all are now. Nearing the end of these 25Days on the back of previous listenings and walkings and prayings. Like Walking with Angels in 2023 and the 25 day advent calendar post-Covid days. Reminding ourselves of the prayers over years and years. Of those who've gone before us. Whose shoulders we walk on now.

And then, looking forward to next year, to a lingering listen over Lent, a creative event at the Minster on Easter Sunday and then Bishop Eleanor's book for Advent - "Walking with Angels".  Another journey in the waiting. A stream among streams of listening activism and prayer bubbling up these past few years. In different places under different banners but with the same heart and hope for the city.

Splitting into four groups, each beside a banner, we prayed. For hope, for holiness, for glory, for the kingdom. Or what in our own words we hope for Hull.

And then we remembered. And sang, And prayed. For our dear friends, Martyn and Cathy Westby and their family. As they walk through extremely painful days. For health and healing and glory and peace and hope and so much love. Our voices cheering them on like a small football crowd, a song packed with power and meaning for Martyn especially...........

Our God is an awesome God
He reigns over heaven above
With wisdom, power and love
Our God is an awesome God...

And then we stood together in the charged silence. Holding the Westbys, holding each other, holding space for all we were feeling, or needing, in that moment.

And then there was cake. And hot drinks. And chat. A sit down. A catch up. With friends old and new and only just met. A pilgrim community. Revelling in a time of rest. And of goodwill. Faces aglow with a glimpse of glory. Readying for home and for things to come.
